Vision

For middle school students to successfully graduate from high school and go on to college.

Mission

Provide early awareness of educational opportunities after high school for middle school students and parents.

Core Values

Program services are based on the notion that College Is Possible for all middle school students. College is an experience that all students should have an opportunity to experience. Parents and students should be the decision-makers regarding their educational experience.

Isaac Stevens Middle School

As part of our early outreach efforts at Isaac Stevens Middle School, we have continued in offering a college prep after school program for sixth graders as well as coordinating local campus visits with the support of the GEAR UP program. The I’m Ready for College after school program focuses on providing 6th grade students with an early start to college expectations and career planning.  The students learn about college tuition costs, careers, majors, and so much more.

In an effort to increase parental involvement in a student’s college planning, WSU Tri-Cities Early Outreach & Latina/o Outreach Program partners with the MESA & GEAR UP Program at Isaac Stevens to collaborate college awareness activities and campus visits to parents as well.  We have arranged a Family Fun Day at WSU Tri-Cities where entire families get to spend a day on campus with faculty and staff to learn about college admissions, financial aid, science, and the educational opportunities available in their local area.

An essential key part of the program is that it recognizes the value of the parents’ role in a student’s education and reaches out to families who are interested in learning about the college admissions and financial aid process.

Mabton Jr./Sr. High School

In our existing partnership with the Mabton School District, we continue providing mentorship and college prep activities to 6th-8th graders with an emphasis on the 7th and 8th grade students.

In the beginning of the school year 2007-2008, Latina/o Outreach became part of the AVID college prep and mentorship program at Mabton Jr./Sr. High School. This program is designed to help underachieving middle and high school students to prepare for and succeed in colleges and universities. AVID offers a rigorous curriculum and college level entry skills. Students are also learning how to study, take notes, read for content, and manage their time. Currently, AVID is offered to about thirty 7th & 8th graders as one of their elective classes.  The program is structured where students will be followed until they graduate from high school as long as stay in the program.

A WSU Tri-Cities staff member is on site twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays; also serving as a direct college contact for high school seniors interested in attending Washington State University.  Staff responds to student inquiries relating to financial aid, scholarships, admissions, etc.

General Outreach

The Early Outreach & Latina/o Outreach Program services are inclusive of everyone upon request and availability; however, we will prioritize local communities and student populations that are most in need of college awareness and readiness services.  Any Middle School in the local service area that is interested in promoting college awareness in their school is encouraged to contact J.R. at our Early Outreach & Latina/o Outreach Office at 509-372-7288 to assist you in preparing your students and parents for a college education. We will provide early outreach services in the language and content that is most culturally appropriate and respectful to your school.
