On December 3, Upward Bound hosted a financial aid presentation and potluck. Mary Bauer from the Washington State University Tri-Cities campus came and presented to the Upward Bound students and families. Students learned about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), what kinds of aid are available from both the state and the federal government as well as the different types of aid and scholarships are available. We also learned about different grants and loans that students may be qualified for and where to look for these resources. Ms. Bauer also advised students on the many changes that are coming to the financial aid system. The recent presidential election and the economic downturn will likely mean changes to federal financial aid and increased competition for scholarships. |

Upward Bound will be hosting a Financial Aid Night and Holiday Potluck for all of our students and their families on December 3, 2008 in the Eisenhower High School Cafeteria from 6-8 p.m. In today’s difficult economic climate, financial aid has become even more important to students who are pursuing higher education. In order to provide the best and most current information, Upward Bound is pleased to host Mary Bauer, a financial aid counselor from Washington State University Tri-Cities to give a presentation and answer questions from our students and families. Upward Bound will also have other financial planning and budgetary resources available to help students and their parents plan for the costs of higher education. |

On Saturday October 25, 2008 the Upward Bound - Yakima program visited Central Washington University for their Open House. We started the day early by catching a bus in White Swan and then headed to Yakima for the rest of the students. When we arrived on campus we were given a bag that contained all sorts of information on CWU and a nice pen. After learning about the CWU admissions process we were whisked off for a tour of the residence halls. Did you know that Central has over 20 residence halls? After our residence hall tour we headed to the cafeteria for lunch. We enjoyed the all-you-could-eat buffet while marveling at the waffle bar. After lunch some students went to a CAMP (College Assistance Migrant Program) while others went on a larger tour of campus. After the tour and the presentation were finished we converged on the CWU bookstore to use the 20% coupons that were in our bags. CWU did a great job and the students had a lot of fun. |

On Friday October 10, 2008 the Upward Bound - Yakima program visited Whitman College for their Fall Visitor’s Day. We started the day off by visiting the Whitman Admissions office and eating lunch in the Jewett Dining Center. The food was excellent and we enjoyed meeting with one of our program’s former students who is now a student at Whitman. He told us about his successes at Whitman and talked about the challenges and opportunities of being a first generation college student at a private school. After lunch, we embarked on a tour of the campus and learned about many of the activities that Whitman has to offer. We saw their academic buildings and their excellent recreational facilities. After the tour we stopped by the school bookstore and coffee shop to see what they had to offer. The trip was a great success and opened the door for future conversations about private higher education. |
