Tour of EWU campusThis year the National College Fair landed right in the middle of Ephrata High School's Homecoming Week on October 22. However, that didn't stop a great group of 12 students from making the trip with GEAR UP.  There were more than 50 schools at the Fair, so the students were able to really get a good sampling of what's available not only here in Washington, but also across the country. Students like Aisha Merred learned about pre-veterinary programs. Shannon Flynn was surprised that there are still all-girls colleges. Everyone was able to take home bags of information from all of their favorite schools that he/she would have never considered before because of reciprocal tuition and tuition discounts. The tour of Eastern Washington University provided a walk through campus and great information on what EWU has to offer students. All in all, it was fantastic (and informative) day.

Future Cougar Day - studentsOnly the most dedicated and devoted fans would arrive before 5 am to board a bus to WSU for Future Cougar Day.  On September 19, we had a stellar group of 28 Ephrata GEAR UP students do just that.  Each student started the trip looking for answers to different questions: "What majors does Wazzu offer?"  "What's it like living in the dorms?"  "Are the Cougars gonna win the game today?"  And each student was able to find out a bit more about college life during powerpoint presentations of major programs, enjoy a student-led tour of dorm life and celebrate a fantastic victory against the Mustangs.

Tayler TerrienTayler Terrien was our finalist for Ephrata's GEAR UP entry in the 8th Grade Career Showcase at WSU Tri-Cities on May 21, 2009. What a year this student has had, from oh my here she comes to being the finalist for the 8th Grade Career Show. The beginning of the year and through out most of it Taylor was very out spoken and would challenge the authority around the school as much as possible. But once she went to the 8th Grade Cohort event she was a changed student. She really turned around and worked extremely hard to be the finalist for the Ephrata 8th grade class. From many hours of practicing to baking brownies for the judges this event was a changing point in her school year and because of the hard work Taylor put forward the staff and other students were able to see her in a new light.

Terrie Mather & Yelena NovikWow, how lucky is Ephrata School District to have a Tutor like Terrie Mather.Terrie has been with GEAR UP for over one year and has really made the most of that time. Terrie has recently been promoted to Office Assistant and as with all her tutoring duties has really worked hard to learn what GEAR UP is all about. She is very good with students and staff and always goes the extra mile to make sure that every thing is in order and very professional. Terrie is a great part of the GEAR UP program here in Ephrata and a very large part for the success we are having with the students.
