Sixth grader, Sierra Stephens, was nominated by GEAR UP staff at FMS for Student of the Month during the ’08-’09 school year. Sierra always had a positive attitude. Along with her great outlook towards school, she possessed great organizational and time management skills. Sierra was conscientious about keeping up on her homework and checking her grades on Skyward, our school district’s online grading system. Her willingness to help was always appreciated! Sierra, however, also struggled with some math concepts. After persistently trying her best, she would always ask for help when she didn’t understand something. Tutors Betty White and Linda Ames were a big help to her in the after-school program. Mrs. Ames spent many hours helping Sierra understand the concepts in math that were hard for her. And, she didn’t quit when homework time was over. She often went back to the library after snack time to complete any unfinished work. Sierra was also willing to help other students study or learn concepts towards good citizenship and learning. Sierra’s experience with Frontier’s GEAR UP tutors, coupled with her own initiative and tenacity, may just be the reason for her success today as a seventh grader!

The 2009-10 school year brought new GEAR UP staff to Frontier Middle School. The additional tutors joined Dawn Goodrich, Liliya Gonchuk, Jennefer Martinez and Katerina Dzyubak. The Frontier tutors will continue to assist students and parents who speak Spanish, Russian, Ukranian and English. Lisa Quinn has joined us for a few afternoon classes and the after school program. She is a graduate of MLSH and is about to begin her Sophomore year at college. Frontier MS has enjoyed the Quinn Family tradition of tutoring students in our GEAR UP program. Lisa is the third family member to work for us. Veronica Pruneda is also tutoring in several afternoon math and science classes. Veronica has been a tutor for the past 5 years. She is fluent in Spanish and English and has completed her AA degree from Big Bend Community College and plans to persue a Bachelors degree in the future. Jen Ruiz is tutoring 3 math classes and one science class. She recently transfered to Frontier Middle School and has 2 years experience as a GEAR UP Lead Tutor. Jen grew up in Moses Lake and is working towards completing her AA degree at Big Bend Community College. Rhonda Gardinier is now the Frontier Middle School GEAR UP Site Director. She has been the GEAR UP Site Director at Warden for the past 2 years. Rhonda has her Bachelor of Science degree from Central Washington University. Frontier Middle School GEAR UP would also like to express deep gratitude to Mr. Martin Guillen, who served as the Site Director here last year. Mr. Guillen has transferred to Pasco High School. And we are also very grateful to Mrs. Linda Ames, who tirelessly assisited us in the transitions as the new tutors came on board. We miss you both, and wish you the best in your new endeavors. |

Frontier and Chief Moses Middle School students in Moses Lake were invited to fun and exciting summer camps, sponsored by GEAR UP and 21st Century Warriors. To attend - just show up – no pre-registration, no fees and tons of fun! Flyers announcing details were mailed out to homes, given to students and placed in strategic public areas (think stores, restaraunts, the public library and clubs). Camps were offered before, during & after Summer School at two locations. Snacks were, of course, provided. Camps schedules overlapped so students had to make decisions about which camp session to go to. So much to choose from – so many things to do - what a busy summer for those with 'SUMMER GULLS' - (goals)! Be sure to see more photos of fun in our Sizzling Summer Photo Albums |
