Students building circuits

This June marks Pioneer GEAR UP's second operation of Space & Technology Bootcamp, which is partnered with LIGO Hanford Observatory.  30 students are engaged in learning about the mysteries of our universe.  In order to better understand the functions of LIGO, a physics driven research center, students are learning the basics behind LIGO operations: circuits, data analysis, and computer programming.  Students are working towards a culminating presentation at the end of this ten day camp, during which they will present their findings to LIGO's research scientists.

Glenwood GEAR UP

On May 15th, students from Glenwood traveled to The Dalles, OR to visit Columbia Gorge Community College. They each received a nice carry pack with the college logo, filled with information about admissions and the programs offered at CGCC. The group listened to presenters from the Admissions/Student Services departments before they split up for a guided tour of campus.

While on tour, students visited the Health Occupations Lab where they had the chance to take the “patient’s” pulse, listen for a heartbeat, learn about the training dummies, how nursing students are monitored and saw the technology equipment used during observation. The tour also included a visit to the Renewable Energy Department, where they heard about the training of windmill technicians. Columbia Gorge is one of three training facilities for this occupation in the U.S. The job placement is extremely high, with some employers hiring students before they even graduate. Students had a great time, with one student saying they thought they might change their educational plans to become a windmill tech instead.

CBSS - Close-UpClose-Up is a program designed to engage 9-12th graders in their history and responsibility as a U.S. citizens, to be involved in civic education and to understand what it means to live under a democracy. Students come from all over the U.S., participating together in peer-to-peer learning. Not only is this experience filled with workshops, seminars, debates, and sessions, but it also incorporates tours, dinners, and optional theatre and Broadway show options. Dr. Jo-Ann Amadeo, VP of Curriculum for the Close-Up program, has a PhD in Human Development and leads the team of curriculum experts and program instructors who guide students through their experience in D.C. This year, CBSS administration and staff members chose Jamie Lakoduk, Chauntelle Kruger, and Ashleigh Huffman to participate in this event.

CBSS GEAR UP

GEAR UP's first 6th grade class to enter the program graduated on June 5th, 2008. It was perhaps one of the proudest moments for the WSU GEAR UP program at Columbia Basin Secondary School the night the Class of 2008 graduated. Although many students had come and gone from the GEAR UP program between their 6th-12th grade careers, a few faces had stuck around, creating an immense hole in the hearts of the GEAR UP staff members following their departure from CBSS. A few names that will be sorely missed are those of Bobby Hughes, Jaqui Prater, Amanda Harris, Chris McMurtry, Marcos Essex, and many more. Site Director, Kassandra Watson, who spoke during the commencement ceremony, recalled with teary eyes how this particular class has made an impact on the program and on all of the GEAR UP staff, personally as well as professionally.

A Great Finish for the CBSS 8th Grade Projects! PDF Print E-mail
CBSS GEAR UP
Written by Nicole Thorne

On Thursday, May 22, Nathaniel Huffman and his family, along with Site Director, Kassandra Watson, and tutor, Linda Ames, traveled to Tri-Cities to compete in the regional 8th grade projects competition. Each GEAR UP site from the surrounding areas came armed with their top students ready to present their career presentation to an audience of family members, friends, and GEAR UP Staff. It was one of Huffman’s first experiences as a public speaker and nerves were high. Each student who came to the competition added their own twist to their presentations. We are very proud of Huffman’s performance and hope to see him come forward on many more occasions.

His potential as an exceptional student and successful individual is only beginning to be realized and it is the position of GEAR UP that we will see extraordinary things from Huffman during his lifetime. Fabian Camacho, who placed 1st, and Chelsea Yockey, who placed 2nd, were unable to compete for CBSS because of various reasons. Ames, who attended the event, commented that Huffman, having placed 3rd from CBSS, took the initiative and accepted the challenge to compete in the Tri-Cities without hesitation. She also conversed with Huffman, saying that this project has definitely been a preparatory experience for more public speaking to come! We admire your courage in the face of challenges, Nathaniel!
